ISM Jars

My girls say the FUNNIEST things sometimes.

Most parents could probably fill a book with the amount of totally random and humorous things that they’ve heard come out of their kid’s mouths.

When my oldest started talking, we began writing down her little phrases. We coined them “Emmy-isms”, words of wisdom from a young mind.

The initial intention of recording these was memories for future laughs, but the idea spiraled and it became something more.

We tried asking her specific questions as a prompt. Her answers were heartfelt, sweet, and just innocently funny.

I started writing her words onto small strips of paper, folding them up, and putting them into a jar. This jar, full of laughs & love has become a recurring gift and tradition.

The JAR

Our ism jar is a small canister I found from the dollar spot at Target. I glued a wooden ball to the top for a knob. Using craft paint, I painted the lid and knob to match. The bow and tag was added for a little bit of color. I wanted a jar that was cute, simple and fun.

If you are thinking of creating your own jar, stick to something simple. It doesn’t even have to be a jar! It can be something you have at home, an old spaghetti jar, or a small box! You can literally use ANYTHING.

The idea is more about what's INSIDE the jar!

The ISMS

We love giving our kids something to think about. I have found that asking questions produces the best, most memorable responses.

Our questions usually have a theme depending on the purpose of the ism jar.

For example, one of our filled jars was for my parents during their two week excursion throughout the western states. We asked our kids any & all travel questions we could come up with. Who is a better driver? What animals do you think they’ll see? Where will they sleep? Get creative and brainstorm any questions that might prompt a good answer.

*Note: I usually include the question on the slip so there is some context for whoever may be reading it.

Your approach to the isms definitely doesn’t always have to be questions & answers.  It can be sweet little somethings they say or even little doodles they create. This is the heart of this idea so make it special!

Some TIPS

  • My parents take turns opening an ism each morning when their jar is full. I love this idea.  It’s a great way to start the day with a smile.

  • We refill the jar for certain occasions like holidays, trips, or even those little snippets of life when you just need a pick me up. If you know someone who needs those happy reminders, give this idea a try.

  • This concept 100% isn’t limited to little kid’s responses. Older kids, teens & adults can make this fun and special too. I love this idea for spouses who just need a sweet connection through the week!

Bottom line, there isn’t a right or wrong way to do it. Approach it in a way that works for your purpose. For us, it's a way to incorporate our kids hearts into gifts and let me tell you, reading their thoughts just NEVER gets old.
